Choosing a Password - Your Rights and Responsibilities

Just as consumers are responsible for protecting their bank account PIN numbers, protecting your user ID and password is your responsibility.  You can maintain security on your account in the following ways:

  • Using alpha-numeric passwords, and changing passwords regularly;

  • Not saving passwords onto the computer but typing them in manually each log-on;

  • Maintaining current anti-virus software;

  • Avoiding downloading files from unknown sources.

When choosing your password take note of the following important points:

  • Your password should be something you will remember, yet something someone trying to break into your account would find hard to guess.

  • You can use any combination of 5 or more upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation. Please note that the password is case sensitive, so 'HELLO' is different from 'hello' is different from 'hElLo'.

  • Do not use your name as a password. You should avoid using words you would find in a dictionary.

  • You might take two short words and combine them with a special character or number, such as "elev8" or "ten-toes" . You could also put together an acronym that is special to you, such as "TJtWii" for "That's Just the Way it is" Of course, these examples are now BAD passwords, since they are shown here.
